NEW BLOG POST: Learning, Mentoring and Psychology: food for thought for the peer crit.
The three above approaches all provide different ways of thinking about the peer crit, and for this post I will consider one point we can take from each.
Over the last couple of months I have met some interesting people, and have taken part in some interesting courses that are not specifically for or on peer crits, but I feel can inform the practice: a Youth Mentoring Course; Introduction to Teaching Adults and last but by no means least I spoke to psychologist Jen Rolfe, co-director of Practically Positive.
April News
Two interesting and stimulating peer crits this April, the most recent one was at Bow Arts Bermondsey Studios.
Once again a theme emerged; all the presenters had photography back grounds. Through their presentations, we examined the experience of looking. We started at the very real with docu videos that commented and danced around the corporate structures we work within. We then looked at the construction of memory, it’s narratives, tricks and textures. The final presentation took us to the key for visual perception- an examination of light , and its own textures, structures and illusions. Thanks to all who took part, showed their work and for the generous comments from the participants.
Lots of exciting things happening, looking forward to running peer crit groups in other locations around the UK. More details to come soon on the ’When&Where’ page.
The next crit group will be in May at Bow Arts, Bow Road. Currently deciding on a good date- if you have a preference do get in touch!
Creativity is the locus of growth. And things that are growing are necessarily underdeveloped and vulnerable. One must be careful not to trample on them.

This is a web based article which has some interesting thoughts on the crit, such as the one above, by Kurt Ralske, May 2011
With thanks to artist Kate Murdoch (http://www.katemurdochartist.com/) who pointed me in the direction of this article.
Engine ChatChat on 19 March
Great Engine ChatChat on Tuesday night, thank you to those who came.
It was a friendly and engaged group with a lovely atmosphere. We had three presenters and two of them have websites (below).
Often there are (unplanned) themes running through the evening. Very briefly, one of the themes on Tuesday was the female. Juno Calypso’s work looked at women in todays context and the Karen Leroy Harris looks at women in history, enjoy!

The peer crit has the potential to be a learning tool for the people responding, as much as the people presenting. It is about asking the right questions that help the presenter engage with their work, and move it forward. You need to question your questions…
